ESUT medical school is committed to excellence, says Ugochukwu

The provost of the College of Medicine, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Prof. Augustine Ugochukwu, says the series of re-training programme being organized for their academic staff were to ensure that the college produces the best quality medical doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists and other related professionals that can successfully practice in any part of the world.

Ugochukwu, stated that with the changing face of medicine, the college had braced up to meet global demands by ensuring that the lecturers were not only encouraged to research but, also to impact on students with the best medical education.

Speaking at a dinner in what looked like the celebration of the success of the department of community medicine, in the college, the erudite scholar expressed with joy that the college, despite its young age, had produced some of the best medical doctors in the country, adding that “although, we have not got there, at the speed we are going, we will get there soon”.

While describing the department of community medicine as one of the most successful departments in the college of medicine, the provost noted that with the accreditation of most of its programmes, management and staff had no excuses not to perform.

He, however, advised chief executives to always carry everyone along in their decisions, even as he stressed the need to have a team for easy coordination. Professor Ugochukwu, also called on pharmaceutical companies in the country to take the issue of clinical trial of their drugs very seriously, pointing out that successful clinical trials of drugs would build the confidence of consumers.

The chief medical director of the ESUT Parklane hospital, Enugu, Dr. Gabriel Njeze, stated that the success achieved by the department of community medicine within such a short time, deserved to be celebrated. He disclosed that shortly after visitations by the different regulatory bodies, community medicine and others got accreditation in quick succession and re-emphasized that the hospital would continue to re-train its workforce with the latest advances in medicine.

In his brief remarks, the award winning head of department of community medicine, Dr. Eddy Ndibuagu, re-assured the university that the department would continue to strive for excellence, adding that after its accreditation, the sky was now their limit.

Although, Dr. Ndibuagu, said he was flattered by the volume of encomia poured on him by the university and Parklane hospital management, the presence of key officials of the institutions at the dinner, despite short notice, would encourage him to do more.

The chairman of house committee on health, in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Dr. Emeka Ogbuabor, called on the academics at the various universities to collaborate and improve the quality of education in the country stressing that of late, the international community was no longer satisfied with the standard of education in Nigeria.

Ogbuabor, who was the chairman of the occasion, charged the staff to remain committed to the improvement of healthcare in Enugu State and Nigeria at large, even as he prayed that the department of community medicine and the hospital would grow from strength to strength. Also speaking, the dean, clinical medicine at the institution, Prof. Frank Ezeugwu, praised the organizational ability of the head of department of community medicine, pointing out that changes in the department flow freely as a family affair since its inception.

According to Ezeugwu, “community medicine is a department after my heart, I commend it for organizing this dinner, because such for a relaxation and socializing with loved ones, can be very useful in fighting stress, this party is the best of its kind”.
