Eliminating River Blindness, Club Issues Seven – Year Deadline

The International President of Lions Clubs, Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada has said that one of the aspirations of the club is to eliminate river blindness in Africa in the next seven years.

At a press briefing in Lagos, heralding the 21st Lions Club All Africa Conference, Yamada said this is part of efforts by his club to empower Africans. He noted that there are a lot of needs on the continent, promising that his organisation will continue to support.

According to him, a high-powered delegation is attending the African conference because aside membership on the continent is growing; the members’ commitment to the cause of the club is also high. He, therefore, commended the enthusiasm of its members in different parts of Africa.

He revealed that over 100,000 people have got their sight restored in Africa through the support from Lions Club. He said that the club would not rest, as it will continue to fight hunger, promote literacy, engage in youth empowerment and provide relief for disaster victims. He also said that another area the club would be providing support in the future is through executing solar related solution projects.

Yamada revealed that with over 11,000 Lions Club in Africa and over 1.4 million members on the continent, the club is the largest service organisation in the world. According to him, the club is not meant for the rich only but all those who have the heart to serve, whether rich or not.
