Did you know that international experiences can help you find a job? Research* shows that employers prefer graduates with transferrable skills gained overseas, such as language skills, cultural awareness and independence.

Law student, Theophila Akpenyi Hilary had her heart set on an international law career from an early age. She chose to study Law at Coventry University in the UK, because of the British legal system’s reputation.

Coventry University’s impressive league table rankings, central location and student diversity also made it an attractive and engaging choice. Coventry University has more than 11,000 international students from around 130 countries, with approximately 1,000 from Nigeria alone.

Choosing a university
Coventry University has a good reputation for teaching quality, and is second in the UK for Teaching Excellence (Times Higher Education 2017 rankings). The quality of teaching on the course was an important factor for Theophila and her parents. She says,
“The lecturers at Coventry University are tremendously helpful. The lecture handouts are very easy to understand and the lectures are recorded for individual revision purposes.”

Coventry University provides students with help and support, ranging from essay-writing at the Centre for Academic Writing and mathematics and statistics help from the award-winning study centre sigma. As part of Coventry University’s commitment to innovation and digital access, Theophila can read legal textbooks and journal articles online, as well as in the library, all of which is helping her to develop the specialist knowledge she’ll need in her career.

A home from home
Theophila had never been to England before attending university. She says, “I felt welcome, even from the first day.” She has found herself equally at home in Coventry, a QS 2018 Top 5 UK Student City. She says, “One of the things I like about Coventry is that it’s a friendly environment. There are several interesting places to visit such as the Cathedral and there are a few Nigerian restaurants a short walk from the campus with affordable prices. There is also a Nigerian student’s society for personal development and social fun.”

A warm welcome
Travelling to another country is a great way to develop independence and life skills for the future. Coventry University has strong international links and supports international students. “I was able to attend an Open Day organised by Coventry University at a hotel in Lagos, Nigeria and a Student Ambassador from my university met me at the coach station, gave me a tour around the university and helped me to move into my accommodation. Nigerian students looking to start a degree in Coventry University will definitely feel welcome, even from the first day.”
