With total support and relationship with the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), the National Universities Commission (NUC), has pledged to raise standard of university education in the country.

Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, who disclosed this at the 2017 NAL yearly convocation, scientific session and investiture of new Fellows, held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), said partnering with the academy in the attainment of excellence and high standards in the nation’s education system is sacrosanct.

The event which also featured the induction of the NUC boss alongside professors Union Edebiri, Mabel Osakwe, Siyan Oyeweso, and Joseph Inikori, as new Fellows of the academy, had as its theme, ‘The Patriot and The Nationalist In An Emergent Democracy.”

Rasheed in his acceptance speech on behalf of the new Fellows, promised to rededicate himself to the ideals of excellence and promotion of the humane values of the country, which he said are critical mandates of the academy.

Stating his unalloyed drive to reposition the NUC for the realisation   of its objectives, he added, “I trust that I shall continue to receive and enjoy guidance, cooperation and nurture from our academy in the task of committing the NUC to raising the standard of university education in Nigeria of the 21st century, impelled by information and knowledge as the sole imperative of growth and development.

“We shall continue to make our modest contribution to the goals, purpose and aspirations of the founding fathers of the academy which are upheld till today. The very fact that the theme of this convocation is Patriotism, denotes and connotes the commitment of our academy to the redesigning project of a united and developed Nigeria presently in the throes of fractious dystopia and worrisome incoherence.”

While reminding  that the process of selecting NAL’s fellows is highly competitive and rigorous, Rasheed commended the president of the academy for considering him and other recipients worthy and suitable to be admitted into the college.
