PLANS are afoot by the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Lagos State Chapter, to organise unified examination for pupils and students of private schools in the state, so says president of the association, Yomi Otubela.

Speaking during a three-day retreat for NAPPS members in Lagos, which had as its theme: “Effective Empowerment Of Schools Through Collaborative Building Capacity and Leadership,” Otubela said: “Among the advantages of the unified examination is to ensure that all stakeholders will be on their toes to ensure that their students perform well in the unified examination. The teachers will also be aware that the assessment of students at the end of every session is not only their responsibility.

“We are going to ensure that the teachers and the schools cover their curriculum as at when due because in the past, we have had situations where students were tested by their teachers alone until they got to primary six or junior secondary three.”

and the situation is what has led to what is now called mass failure in external examinations like the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations Council (WASSCE) or the National Examination Council (NECO).

Otubela expressed optimism that any child that scores up to 50 per cent in the unified examination would not have issues recording good grades in the aforementioned external examinations.

Proprietress of Starland Private School, Lagos, Mrs. Lanre Olomofe Kufeji, advised teachers to keep improving their skills in order to discharge their mandate creditably.

Professor Kehinde Alebiosu of Department of Science and Technology Education, Faculty of Education Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, who presented a paper titled: “Quality Pedagogy: “The Pivot of Quality Education,” appreciated efforts made by NAPPS towards ensuring quality education.

“Private school owners are really assisting us. I am not saying the government is not trying its best, but they are really assisting us.

You can see that private school owners have come together to reappraise and reengineer themselves.
