The new Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, Delta State, Prof. Akpofure Rim- Rukeh, has formally taken over as the fourth substantive vice-chancellor of the institution.

President Mohammed Buhari approved his appointment subsequent to his selection by the university governing council.Prof Rim-Rukeh who took over from the outgone Vice Chancellor, Prof. Akii Ibhadode, vowed to tackle the infrastructural deficit and to reposition the institution to live up to its billing as the first petroleum varsity in Africa.

During a handover ceremony he outlined a six-point agenda which he said would transform the university in the five years of his administration. He said the vision would revolved around the following six pillars teaching and learning excellence, research, increased funding, attract regional/international faculty students, academic partners and international industry partners. He said his vision would be “to make FUPRE a globally connected petroleum university whose transformative research and teaching places the university at the forefront of leadership in energy discoveries benefitting to society as whole”

The new VC said his administration would source funds to build a befitting university auditorium, convocation arena, Senate building, ICT centre, new classrooms, laboratories and offices, adding that staff and students’ welfare would be taken seriously by his administration.

“Am also aware of a number of challenges confronting us in the discharge of our duties. For exambly, the near absence of power supply, unconducive offices, poor teaching infrastructures etc. Let me assure you that I wil try my utmost best to put these challenges behind us as soon possible” Rim Rukeh said.

He warned that his administration would not tolerate issues such as sex or money for grades as these, he said, are crime against academic excellence. He said offenders would be punished even with minimum evidence.

He appealed to staff and stakeholders to support his administration and exercise patience as efforts are made to “break all identified bottle necks”.

The  VC said despite funding constraints and a number of bureaucratic issues the outgone VC brought the university to national and international recognition and promised to uphold his legacy of inventions and patents.
