aunTHE American University of Nigeria (AUN) is not relenting in its drive to expand the frontiers of knowledge, just as it is striving to justify its claim of being the country’s premier development varsity.

Only recently, the school received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer PhD and master’s degree programmes in information systems and computer science effective 2015/16 academic session.

This development, brings to two, the number of doctorate degree programmes the school has secured approval to run in as many years having also secured approval to offer PhD and master’s courses in Business Administration from the NUC.

The Guardian reliably gathered that the latest approval was consequent upon the acceptance by NUC’s management committee of the resource evaluation reports turned in by a panel of experts, which visited the Adamawa-based school earlier in the year and attested to the institution’s preparedness to run the programmes.

Boasting advanced technological infrastructure and digital content delivery in all taught subjects; the university has been fully accredited by the NUC since 2003. Accredited programmes are: accounting, business administration, finance, management & entrepreneurship, marketing, English language & literature, telecommunication & wireless technology, information system, computer science, software engineering, economics, international & comparative politics, and mass communications (communication & multimedia, advertising, print journalism, television/film, multimedia design.)

As an institution using American university pedagogy, AUN, now celebrating its 10th year, strives to comply with both American accreditation standards as well as those of the NUC, which has the statutory mandate to accredit university academic programmes in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the school is now affiliated with the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI). The UNAI is made up of academic institutions that focus on global priorities, including peace, human rights, and sustainable development.

The school’s enrollment was announced recently via a UNAI email of April 6, 2015 to the president of the institution, Margee Ensign. Arthur Georges signed it.

The email attaching a certificate of affiliation with UNAI, congratulated the president on the new development and said, among other things, “You join nearly 1, 000 colleges and universities in some 120 countries who are working with the United Nations” to promote the above-listed global priorities.
As a member, AUN is expected to carry out at least one activity in support of the UNAI and its 10 principles during a calendar year. The membership entitles it to airing of all UNAI-related activities in the organisation’s newsletter and on the website https://academicimpact.un.org/. The university is also authorised to use the UNAI logo in all its promotional materials.

Membership in the UNAI, according to its official website, “is open to all institutions of higher education granting degrees or their equivalent, as well as bodies whose substantive responsibilities relate to the conduct of research.”
