THE Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Rahamon Adisa Bello, has charged about 6,644 newly admitted students of the institution for the 2014/2015 academic session to vigorously pursue their academic programmes so as to benefit from the scholarship opportunities in the school.

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony last weekend, Bello informed that the school received a total of 61,931 applicants from the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and 4,316 direct entry applicants, out of which the university was able to clear and admit 6,644 students representing 10 per cent of the total applicants.

He advised the newly admitted to make good use of their stay in the institution and avail themselves of every opportunity needed to achieve success in their academic journey.

He said: “I wish to encourage you all to work hard and distinguish yourselves in your academics. Gaining admission into the over 52-year-old institution is not only noble, but also glorious, especially when you consider the total number of applicants. Our university has a motivational package for scholars. It is for students with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.50 and above.”

“It is made up of N50,000 scholarship, 50 per cent discount on bed spaces, nomination to participate in seminars and conferences, nationally and internationally; participation in recruitment tests in the final year, nomination for scholarship from external bodies on the request from organisations and selection as guest speakers at orientation programmes. You will agree with me that this package is not only attractive but equally inspiring.”

He continued: “I, therefore, urge you to aspire to be a UNILAG scholar so that you can also benefit from this package. Other organisations and individual philanthropists also offer scholarships for specific areas of endeavour.”

He further urged them to shun all manners of immoral behaviour, cultism, indecency and other social vices that is likely to mar their future, adding that the university has zero-tolerance for all forms of misconduct.

Bello explained that the school has put in place several measures to ensure students acquire the required skills and improve their capability of gaining employment and creating jobs after graduation.

He also announced at the occasion that the institution has lifted the ban on student unionism, having certified that unionism has regenerated itself to maturity after the unfortunate incidents of 2005 which led to the suspension of students union activities.
