Amid tight security, UNN matriculates 10,000 students
Amid tight security provided by a combination of Police, Army, officials of the State Security Services and Civil Defence, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), yesterday, matriculated 10,000 students into various programmes of the institution.
The tight security mounted by the law enforcement agencies followed the threat by striking non-academic staff of the institution to disrupt the exercise over alleged failure to address their welfare.
They had gathered as early as 7:00 a.m. and blocked the main entrance into the campus, apparently to prevent matriculating students, parents, friends and others from accessing the premises.
The timely intervention of security personnel, led by the Nsukka Area Commander, Mr. Steve Yabanet, and the Divisional Police Officer for Nsukka, however, restored normalcy. They contained the protesters and cleared the way for human and vehicular movement.
Mr. Paul Arua, leader of demonstrators, said the matriculation should not hold since non-teaching staff were on national strike. “It is the responsibility of non-teaching staff to organise a matriculation. And since we are on strike, the matriculation should not hold,” he said.Addressing the students, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, urged them to take their education seriously and shun deviant behaviours.
“The University of Nigeria Nsukka has an avalanche of rules and regulations which are applied with strictness without favouring anybody. You are advised to avoid deviant behaviour because its consequences are not palatable in UNN. Shun cultism, indecent dressing and exam malpractice else you be expelled,” he warned.
