Former acting vice-chancellor, Imo State University (IMSU), Prof. B. E. B Nwoke has identified undue external interference and politicisation of tertiary administration as part of the problems hindering the development of university education, particularly state-owned institutions.

He pointed out that a situation where state governors would want to appoint their stooges as vice-chancellors affect the free flow of academic and administrative process of the university.

Nwoke who spoke with The Guardian against the backdrop of calls for the removal of the IMSU VC, Prof. Victoria Obasi dismissed the call as unnecessary and unwarranted.

According to him, the university has recorded significant successes since the VC took over office, adding that those who made the call do not mean well for the institution.

He said, “The office of vice-chancellor is a tenured office of five years, and any attempt to truncate it will definitely affect the entire running of the university. It is unfortunate that some persons would want to destroy the system in order to secure an appointment. It is also ridiculous that any governor would prefer to install his cronies without considering the consequences.

“As far as I am concerned, Prof. Obasi has written her name in gold in the annals of the university through her administrative ingenuity. Under her reign, the school has witnessed prompt payment of salaries, promotion of staff, infrastructural development, cordial relationship between staff and students among other feats.”

Meanwhile, the university has secured full accreditation on 63 out of the 65 courses offered and has concluded plans to mark 25 years of its establishment.

Obasi who disclosed this to journalists said the silver jubilee celebration would avail the institution the opportunity to induct the new state governor Emeka Ihedioha, as the visitor to the university as well as for the commissioning of some new projects in the school.

She also restated her resolve to ensure that the institution maintains enviable height in the country.
