Certain age-long misconceptions about Islam, especially as it concerns jihad and terrorism are the thematic engagement in the latest offering entitled: Jihad and Terrorism in Islam: Facts and Explanation from the Holy Quran and the Holy Bible.

The author, Sulaimon Adeyemi Dada, lays facts bare and provides scriptural quotes from the Quran and Bible to marshal his argument, thereby providing enlightenment on the issues.

The 149 pages, 11 chapters book has its foreword written by a scholar from the International Institute of Journalism, Murtada Busair Ahmed.

He condemned terrorism and its havoc in its entirety.

He insisted that terrorism does not have any resemblance whatsoever with Islam as it is perceived by some non-Muslims.

Ahmed described the western media’s ascription of terrorism to Islam as nauseating, blasphemous and obnoxious.

He decried Islamophobia and tagged it deadly scourge “in the life of the myopic who makes no efforts to know Islam and search for knowledge about its tenets and teachings.”

The author in chapter one explained the real essence of Islam, saying that the religion underscores the acts of worship, gratification, adoration and sanctification as reflected in the total submission to the Almighty Allah alone.

Dada also establishes the fact the Holy Quran, contrary to beliefs in certain quarters that it was written by some kind of beings, was a pure message from Allah, adding that the book was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through Angel Jibril in verses and chapters at different times for 23 years.

He mentioned that it was revealed in phases at the instances of different events, issues and circumstances.

In chapter four, he explained how the early Muslims were subjected to torture, maltreatment, tied and dragged on burning sand with heavy stone owing to their embrace of the religion of Allah.

Dada said this gave birth to Jihad, saying that it connotes self-defense against external aggression, “therefore, it is an act of Jihad to protect one’s life and property from invasion with the legally acceptable means.”

However, the author was quick to add that Jihad does not mean to attack a second party or a third party who does not cause any harm to one’s life and property.

He said Allah commanded the Muslims to protect themselves and their properties against the aggression by the enemies.

Dada quoted Al Baqorah, Q2:190-193: “And fight in the way of Allah (against) those who fight you, but transgress not the limit; truly Allah likes not the transgressors.

And kill them (too) wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they had turned you out; and infliction of injury (or torment) is worse than killing, and fight not with them at the sanctuary of Mecca unless they (enemies) fight you there; but if they attack you, then kill them (too); such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

But if they cease, then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. And fight them until there is no more torment (or oppression and disbelief), and (all kind of) worship should be for Allah (alone); but if they cease (in fighting you), let there be no transgression except against the wrongdoers.”

Dada also noted in Chapter six that details about Jihad or struggle on the path of Allah by earlier prophets and messengers of Allah were provided in the Holy Bible, quoting 1Samuel 5:17-25.

These were events when the Israelites were challenged by the Philistines who mocked their God and challenged them to a fight or be their slaves forever.

But David rose to the challenge and defeated them by killing their warrior, Goliath.
