Community sues Eko Electricity Distribution Company, others over alleged estimated billings

The people of Itire–Ikate and Ijesha in Lagos have sued the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) at the Federal High Court, Lagos over arbitrary billings.

Others joined as defendants in the suit are the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

The plaintiffs are also complaining of the inept and epileptic power supply rendered by EKEDC in the area, among others.

The matter is before Justice Saliu Saidu.

In the suit, which is a class action, the plaintiffs represented by Olufemi Okuyemi, Mrs Junaid Fatimat, Abdulrasheed Jimba, Haruna Ogunyomi, Azeem Owe, Ajia Ifeoma and Segun Shonubi are seeking for an order of injunction restraining the first defendant from further negligence in computing the electricity bills of the plaintiffs.

They also want the court to halt the first defendant from disconnecting the plaintiffs from electric power supply within the period it would comply with the orders of the Honorable Court as stated in the plaintiffs’ relief.

Besides, the plaintiffs wants the court to order the defendants to stop from rendering to them any service whatsoever, in breach of the provisions of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act.

The matter is adjourned to June 4, 2015 for hearing.
