The College of Medicine, University of Lagos Alumni has concluded plans to position the institution as a world class centre of innovation, research, learning and teaching.

Stressing that one of the visions of the college is to be great centre of learning, scholarship and training ground for men and women dedicated to the service of their fellow men and women, who die daily for lack of adequate medical care.

To achieve this feat, Chairman Organizing Committee, Professor Oladapo Ashiru said the institution, ahead of its College High Table/Fundraising Dinner scheduled for 2nd of February, 2019, is set to raise N2bn.

“Any country that do not do research is going down because research improves oneself, we need buses and ambulance, closed circuit television for security but more importantly, when you do research you improve the health of the people and community and save money,” he said.

Ashiru said the College is using the High Table Dinner for a fundraising event as well using Alumni as the driver to showcase the achievements and present compendium brochure for projects to solicit for support from friends of the College, philanthropic individuals, parents, multinational corporations, foundation among others.

“We plan that this will be the beginning of a continuous tradition similar to Oxford and Cambridge Ball, Harvard Alumni Dinner, or Trinity College Dublin Dinner,” he added.

Similarly, College Provost, Professor Folusho Lesi said the alumni have distinguished themselves in various fields.

“We have produced ministries of health, commissioners of health, federal government ambassador, physicians to the presidents and vice presidents, senators, vice chancellors and more.

“College has grown remarkably, now with three faculties namely, basic medical sciences, clinical sciences and dental sciences, consisting of 26 academic departments with a student population of 3,365 students and staff strength of 1,850.

“Over the past 50 years the College has produced over 6,000 graduates in disciplines of medicine, dentistry, microbiology, physiotherapy, physiology, radiography and pharmacology,” he said.
