A Muslim cleric, Ustadh Jamiu Tirmidhi, has called on Muslims to embrace the principle of inheritance distribution as enshrined in the doctrines of Islam and apply it whenever the situation arises.

Tirmidhi made the call at a public lecture organised by The Muslim Congress (TMC) Ikorodu Branch at the Ansar-Ud-Deen, Mosque, Ikorodu.
He said that inheritance was a fundamental issue in the sight of God and as such, Muslims should not joke with it. He spoke on the need for Muslim Ummah to revive the sunnah (tradition of Prophet Muhammad) on the calculation and distribution of inheritance that a deceased Muslim left behind.

The cleric also advised that Muslim organisations and mosques should set up inheritance committee, comprised of Islamic scholars (ulama), accountant, valuers and legal practitioner.

“Our Muslims professionals (Accountants, valuers’ and lawyers) should always have it in mind that administration of inheritance is “FEE SABEELI LLAHI” (a duty for sake of Allah Ta’ala),” he said. Tirmidhi added that the assignment (inheritance calculation and distribution) was as obligatory as the five pillars of Islam, according to the Islamic jurisprudence.

He, therefore, encouraged people, who have a mastery of mathematics, particularly numbers, to intensify effort in learning about inheritance distribution.

The cleric, according The Renaissance examined various schools of thoughts on inheritance, stressing that although different scholars and indeed practices have differed on rules of the subject, the underlying basis for conflicts on inheritance was ignorance.

According to him, some people are deliberately flouting the stipulated rules on the inheritance for selfish reasons.

He highlighted various classifications of apportioning inheritance in Islam. The classifications include ten types of male heirs and ten types of female heirs, alongside others, who are further placed in different segments.

He explained that a major condition for sharing inheritance, according to Islamic injunction, was to ascertain that the deceased’s debts (in case of any), and his stipulated wishes were taken care of, before execution of the will.

Using a case study of a man who left N6 million for his children after his death, he illustrated his point with a scenario of male and a female, saying that the son would inherit two-thirds of the money, while the daughter would inherit one-third. “When a man dies and leaves N6m cash to be inherited by his two, children- a son and a daughter, Shariah dictates that the male heir should be given two-thirds of the money, which will be N4m, while the daughter will get one-third of the money, which will be N2m” he explained.
