A former student of Childville School, Ogudu, Katherine Eta has emerged the second runner up in the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) world championship held in the United State of America.

The championship is a global competition that tests students’ proficiency in basic computer literacy in line with global standards.

About 1.1million students from 140 countries contested the 2017 MOS world competition in versions 2013 and 2016 of the Microsoft programmes worldwide, while 157 students from 50 countries eventually qualified to compete in the world finals.

Sixteen-year old Eta emerged the second runner up in the competition and won a cash prize of $1,500. An elated Eta who emerged 10th in the competition in 2016 said she was motivated to put in more efforts after seeing people from other countries excel.

“I got a lot of self motivations when I saw people from other countries becoming world champions, it actually moved me to want to be there. I felt like 10th place is not where I should have been so I decided to try again, try harder and then move to a higher place. I hope to still try to take the first position. I feel great, privileged to represent my country and make Nigeria, my parents, school and myself proud. I’m very happy that I was able to come third in the world.

Eta who hopes to study Computer Engineering said she is currently learning new skills to prepare herself for future challenges.

Mrs. Edna Augusto, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), ReadManna Empowerment Initiative, organisers of the competition in Nigeria, appealed to school administrators to expose their students to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) competitions to enhance their literacy skills.

Augusto who stated this at the award presentation for winners of MOS championship in Nigeria held at the Lagos City hall said the competition enables schools to evaluate their curriculum, and carry out independent assessment of students’ ability in basic ICT.

She explained that ReadManna promotes proficiency in basic computer literacy among students through ICT competitions.

Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Peter Amangbo who was represented by General Manager, Wunmi Ogunbiyi said the financial institution decided to support the initiative to encourage more participation and ensure the growth of ICT in the country.

“The bank is increasing its participation and awareness in ICT; the importance of technology is actually been felt nationwide, there is greater participation from both public and private schools, so Zenith bank is just keying into it.

The bank subsequently presented Eta with a cash prize of N750, 000 while her ICT teacher received N250, 000 with a pledge to annually sponsor six participants for the world championship.
