The management of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Staff Secondary School, has expressed its commitment to consolidate on the achievement of the institution in the last 25 years of its establishment.

The school was founded in November 1992 to provide secondary education for children and wards of members of academic and non-academic staff of FUTA as well as service other segments of the Nigerian society especially, Akure, its location.

Reputed to be one of the best secondary schools in Nigeria considering its good infrastructure and high level academic performance of its students, the school has one of the best results in both the West African School Certificate (WASC) and National Examination Council (NECO) examinations across the country.

Speaking with The Guardian as part of activities to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the school on Monday, the principal, Anthony Ikuyinminu, expressed delight about the giant strides of the institution since inception.

Tracing the humble beginning of the school and highlighting its high achievements within the period, Ikuyinminu said “The school commenced with initial staff strength of about six (6) and having students population of eighty-five (85). However, over the years, the school has grown tremendously under different managements and administrations to its present status of staff strength of over one hundred (100) and students population of over seven hundred (700).

“There has also been an improvement in the area of infrastructural facilities. We now have a Computer Laboratory functioning efficiently in order to equip our students with the necessary skill in the ICT world. In addition to this, we have a Home-Economics Laboratory for the acquisition of skills not just in cooking alone but also in other fields of human endeavour such as Tailoring, Arts and Craft, Bag and purse-making, Beads-making, etc.

“Moreover, there are well equipped Science Laboratories that are almost of the University standard and are second to none in the state. For this, we thank our founding fathers for making this possible.”

Speaking on the modest fee regime of the institution and discipline among students, the principal said, “We have actually come a long way not only in meeting the educational needs of the staff children at the secondary school level but have also extended same gesture to non staff children without any fee discrimination.

“In the area of discipline, we are doing our best in recent times to reduce the level of indiscipline among our students to the barest minimum having in mind that these students are coming from different socio-educational background where there might have been some laxity in this area.”

The week-long activities marking the anniversary of the school commences with a road show next Wednesday and ends with an anniversary thanksgiving the following Sunday. In between these activities are programmes dedicated to sporting, career talks, quiz competition and open day during which the gates of the school will be flung open to parents.
