25 undergraduates receive DEWEF scholarship award

Twenty five medical and engineering students from five major universities in Lagos and Ogun States have received this year’s Rotary International District 9110’s Endowment and Welfare Educational Fund Scholarship (DEWEF) to the tune of N100, 000.00 every year per student for minimum of two years and a maximum of four, depending on course of study.

The ceremony, witnessed by parents and guardian of the recipients took place at the Keystone bank hall, Rotary Centre, Ikeja.

Chairman, Board of Trustees, Adeniji Raji said about 85 students who met the prerequisite qualification as well as indigent 200 or 300 level medical and engineering students of state or federal government universities, colleges of education or polytechnics in Lagos and Ogun States have so far benefitted from the scheme.

Raji said the beneficiaries are from Lagos State University (LASU), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye and Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode.

Raji who is the past district governor enjoined the awardees to maintain the same virtue of hardwork they demonstrated in the course of screening, coupled with humility and discipline in their studies, realising that they are the leaders of tomorrow.

“You are well aware that corruption and greed are at a cancerous level in our country today of which the cure is not in the courts, it is a moral battle” he said.

He also used the occasion to advocate improved and qualitative education in the country, pointing out that the declining standard should trouble stakeholders and all concerned.

He identified poor funding, poor infrastructure, lack of quality teachers, inadequate learning and teaching aids as obstacles to a sound educational system.

On his part, the district governor, Kola Sodipo said the scheme would go a long way to assist indigent but brilliant students to fulfill their dreams.

Chairman, DEWEF organising committee, Alaba Olalekan advised the beneficiaries to maintain their high level performance so as to continually benefit from the scheme.
