Sambo raises hope on new power projects

The Vice President, Mohammed Namadi Sambo has assured of the completion of some major power projects under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) scheme, even as arrangements are in top gear to exploit the abundant water resources for power generation.

Sambo, who is also the Chairman Board of Directors of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC), operators of NIPP, raised hope on the new projects while commissioning the 330/132/33kV power transmission infrastructure in Oke-Aro, boundry of Lagos and Ogun states.

Sambo said 560 Mega Watts (MW) Calabar power station in Cross-River state, new transformers and two new distribution lines to serve Mowe community, are awaiting commissioning.

He however noted that the power plants in Gbarain, Bayelsa state, Omoku power station in Rivers state and Egbema in Imo state are at various advanced stages of completion.

Other projects nearing completion includes the 21.5 kilometer gas pipeline from Creek town to Ikot Nyong power plant projects. The completion of 265 out of 296 distribution injection substations nationwide and several other power projects across the country.

The vice president, who was represented by the Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo, however put the present nation’s power generation level at 5,500MW, adding that the NIPP contributes about 2,600mw to the grid. In its Phase II mandate, Sambo said, the NDPHC will vigorously pursue the construction of hydro-power plants mainly in the Northern axis to ensure a mixed grid distribution.

“Curently, the company plans to construct new large and medium hydro-power dams and the provision of power components for 13 existing dams, mostly in northern Nigeria that will step up transmission to a wheeling capacity of up to 20,000mw,” he said.

The Managing Director, NDPHC, James Olotun, who was highly elated at the project, described it as the biggest transmission plant in Nigeria with capacity to wheel 330/132/33kV of power to the distribution network.

He said Oke Aro station which serves as interface between Egbin Power plant and the Ikeja West substation, was conceived to provide substantial decongestion for Ikeja West in particular as well as the other 2nos older 330kV substations in Lagos located at Akangba and Aja respectively.

“Oke Aro substation was equipped with large capacity 2nos 300MVA 330/132kV transformers, making the station the first of its kind in the grid with a total transformation capacity of 600MVA at the 330kV level. A 75MVAR 330kV shunt reactor was also installed for effective grid voltage control.

“At the 132kV level, 2nos 60MVA 132/33kV transformers were also installed providing a total of 120MVA transformation for bulk evacuation capacity into the 33kV distribution network in the immediate environment of Oke Aro.

The station construction was completed with adequately rated busbars, switchgear, automation as well as protection and control equipment to enable it cope with the high power flows associated with its specially rated high capacity transformers.

“In order to achieve the objective of Oke Aro serving as a relief to Ikeja West, two of the 3nos 330kV evacuation lines from Egbin Power plant to Ikeja West were turned in and out of Oke Aro to effect connection of the substation to the grid.

Oke Aro was thereafter successfully energized from the grid on 22nd May 2013.

All these facilities have been handed over to TCN for operations,” he stated. The plant has since been handed over to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for operations. The Deputy Managing Director, TCN, Abubakar Atiku Tambuwal, commended the NDPHC for the successful completion of the project, assuring of effective and efficient running of the facility.
