Nigeria to get fresh $350m World Bank facility for sanitation projects
The Country Director of the World Bank in Nigeria, Rachid Benmessaoud, has said the global lender would spend additional $350 million to support the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) projects of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources.
Speaking at a national stakeholders’ consultation workshop on rural water project yesterday in Abuja, Benmessaoud said the globa bank currently supports the sector with $250 million to ensure better delivery. He noted that the lack of water, sanitation and hygiene services leads to high infant mortality, deteriorates health and reduces educational attainments.
The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, explained that the workshop was part of the ministry’s Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (PEWASH), a 15-year project geared at attracting investments into the sector.
