The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has concluded plans to host an art competition in its drive to promote arts, culture and encourage undergraduates in the country.

With the theme, ‘Interconnectivity, Networking and Leadership’, the competition is targeted at young undergraduates in tertiary institutions to showcase the originality of its artistic skills.

The competition is opened to all genre of art to include, painting, sculpting, banner/posters, photography, wall relief, digital graphics wall murals among others.

Speaking to journalist in Lagos at the weekend, the Managing Director, NIBSS, Adebisi Shonubi, said the competition is aimed at encouraging youth participation in promoting indigenous art culture.

Shonubi said the company is currently carrying out a retrofit of her office complex with a view to compliment the new look with a collection of diverse local art works.

The intention is to provide young student artists the opportunity of having their works adorn the wall of NIBSS. NIBSS will commission the artists’ briefs that best reflect the themes being promoted.

“Now we are focusing on environment, people passing by can see and relate with. We are revamping the building and what we intend to do is to have pieces of artwork within the building.

“Unlike what we do before, visiting the gallery to buy paintings, we decided to do it slightly different. We want to take the opportunity to encourage young people to start showcasing what they have.

“We want to commission new artist. We have about 40 to 50 pieces of art in the whole building. We don’t want to deal with any known artist. We want young people who are students to be given their first chance to showcase their ideas through paintings. The competition is open to anyone in a university.

“They are to do a pager explaining what their concepts are. We want to commission them to do art for us at NIBSS. We would pay them for the commission, this would also help support them in school. This is the softer side of NIBSS,” he said.

According to him, NIBSS expects an interplay of relief features with water movement using sustainable materials, lighting, nature, inorganic forms amongst others in expressing the concept and a bit of magic.

A grant will be given to commission the artwork. Entries submission will take place from 21st to 30th of September.

The competition is opened to all artist who are students of the higher institutions in Nigeria. Interested students are expected to register online at www.nibsscompetition.com.ng as work would be selected from online submission.
