THE Nigerian Police has reiterated that it has the capacity to provide security along waterways during the forth coming general elections scheduled for March 28th and April 11 2015.

Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Maritime  Command, Kalafite Adeyemi, stated this during a familiarization tour of Ports Authority Police, Eastern Ports Command, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Adeyemi, however, lamented that the Eastern Ports Command needs urgent attention following the deplorable state of the port.

She said: “The marine police, are up and doing; they have been patrolling the waterways. We have been lecturing our men to be of good behaviour. They are going to perform well .We are ready for the elections”

Adeyemi added: “We are out to do our jobs and to be on steady patrol of the waterways. We have the capacity to face whatever challenges that may confront us. That is why I am on this tour because the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abbah, asked me to go round and see how we can provide all those things before the time of election”.

The AIG Maritime Command charged the officers and men to be of good conduct during the forthcoming polls, reminding them that they were bound to provide security for the election.

She said:”It is time to make sure that the men are well kitted and provided for logistically. Once again, I am here to encourage them and tell them to be of good behaviour, and to contribute their own quota to the success of the forthcoming elections. They must not be found wanting”.

Earlier in his speech, the Commissioner of Police, Port Authority Police, Eastern Command, James Caulcrick, disclosed that the major challenges faced by the Command are inadequate arms and ammunition for effective patrol and guard duties within the Ports and its environs, lack of gunboats and patrol boats, as well as lack of personalized radio transmission network within the barracks.

He also mentioned shortage of operational vehicles, barracks accommodation for Port Police personnel and inadequate staffing of the Command.

Also, the Acting General Manager of Eastern Ports, Mr. Lawrence Alabi, urged Police to provide new platforms for marine police, pointing out that, there had been regular “unpleasant report” about attacks by sea pirates on the waterways.
