Lekki deep sea port.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has said that the Lekki deep-sea port project sited in Lagos, will create the massive capacity that will transform Nigeria’s international trade, and further position the state as the most important commercial hub in Africa.

According to him, the state government is investing heavily in its infrastructure especially in the transport sector, noting that the Federal Government is also supporting the state with infrastructure investments in the major sector areas of transport and agriculture.

Speaking at the Ernst and Young (EY) West Africa Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Lagos, Hamzat said the state government is also doing everything within its power to support the ambitions and aspirations of entrepreneurs in the state.

“The fact that Lagos is the economic hub of Nigeria, and the biggest sub-national economy in Africa today is because of the fantastic ideas which entrepreneurs transmit daily into reality.

“I know people have some challenges on the business and investment landscape in Lagos. We are automating a lot of our services for greater efficiency and transparency and also trying to make it easy for people to get their land titles if all the required documents are submitted,” he said.

In his remarks, Regional Managing Partner, West Africa, EY, Henry Egbiki, said the idea behind the awards was to celebrate entrepreneurs, noting that entrepreneurs are the drivers of growth in every economy.

He noted that with the event, entrepreneurs who have travailed against challenges would be able to share their stories to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and to build a better working world.

His words: “We believe that entrepreneurs are worthy of recognition and celebration. These are men that are creating employment for our people in the economy. The journey of entrepreneurs is not a small journey and most people only see the successes and not the failures.

“We hosted this event because of our purpose of building a better working world. We look around us today and so many challenges are facing us as a nation. We have a lack of infrastructure, corruption, and unemployment. There has to be collaboration between the private sector and the government for them to create values for our people.”

“Through their innovation and creativity, entrepreneurs are transforming the world around them. They take risks and create jobs, and we believe they should be celebrated because of their work and typical importance to the economy.

We believe that we should inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs by sharing their stories.”

In his remarks, Founder and Chairman, Coscharis Group, Cosmas Maduka, who emerged the winner of the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award, said he never expected the award though it put pressure on him to continue to do what he does best, noting that it was the second time he contested for the award.

In his remarks, Chief Executive Officer, Beloxxi Industries, Obi Ezeude, who also won in another category urged young entrepreneurs to develop a great deal of passion for what they do to travail.
