The Lagos State Government has lauded FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc for its efforts and commitment to end malnutrition in Nigeria.The Deputy Governor, Lagos State, Oluranti Adebule, said the rate of child malnutrition in the country is alarming, calling on other stakeholders in the food industry to emulate FrieslandCampina WAMPCO’s gesture towards addressing malnutrition in the nation.

Adebule who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Lagos State, Adebunmi Adekanye, at the launch of FrieslandCampina WAMPCO’ Peak 456 Drink, Move, Be Strong (DMBS) pre-school programme, assured the company of the State’s commitment to support the Organised Private Sector (OPS) to end child malnutrition in Lagos State and the country at large.

“We commend this move to end this scourge of malnutrition in the country. We are also glad that you are starting with teachers. We want to encourage you do more to address child malnutrition. The Lagos State government will continue to support you till we eradicate malnutrition in Nigeria,” she said.

Also speaking at the event, the Corporate Affairs Director, FrieslandCampina WAMPCO, Ore Famurewa, said the recent report from the 5th Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS5) conducted between 2016 and 2017 by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and other key partners revealed that there has been an increase in child malnutrition in Nigeria among children under age five.

She added that it is evident that malnutrition crisis has greatly impacted the nation’s potential with 100o children under age of 5 dying every day.She noted that FrieslandCampina WAMPCO is committed to improving the nutritional status of Nigerian children to secure the economic potential of the nation.

“Together with our partners, the Nutrition Society of Nigeria and the support of the Federal and State government, we strongly believe we can help reduce significantly the incidences of malnutrition in Nigeria. Our goal is to drive healthy eating and active lifestyle habits by educating children from young age,” she said.

According to her, schools are ideal for bringing nutrition education to children at an early age through qualified staff, saying that the sooner children start making healthy choices; the easier it becomes to keep up good eating habits later in life.
