MANAGING Director and Chief Executive Officer of Marine Platforms, Mr. Taofik Adegbite has urged the Federal Government to look beyond oil and diversify into other sectors of the nation’s economy to forestall the dwindling economic situation of the country.

Adegbite, who is a maritime expert, charged President Muhammadu Buhari to look into other sectors like fishing, agriculture and others.

“If Nigeria is going to overcome the current economic hardship, government must look beyond oil exploration and focus on other aspects of marine business like fishing and others.”

Adegbite, who spoke in Lagos during an interview to herald the 2016 inaugural lecture of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ibadan Council, titled “Nigeria Beyond Oil”, advised President Buhari to set up a Strategy and Implementation Unit which will be saddled with the responsibility of researching and providing pragmatic solutions to the problems bedeviling the nation’s economy.

“This group of people will not be allowed to involve in the politics of this nation but their concerns’ would be on how to foster economic growth for this nation.

The unit will only research into the economic problems of this nation with a view to providing long-term solutions to it. And government must empower them to a level that no politician will be able to buy them over for his or her selfish political vision,” he said.

Noting that the nation is blessed with many mineral and natural resources that could turn the fortune of this nation around if properly managed, he urged the President to be focus on his vision for the country.

He commended the determination of the President to fight endemic corruption in the country but called on the government to put business friendly polices into place to revamp the economy.

“President Buhari should face the challenges of this nation headlong and continue with his sincere campaign against corruption,” he noted.

When asked if the nation’s maritime sector thrives, Adegbite said Nigeria was still among the developing nations in terms of maritime business.

He, however, expressed optimism that things could turn around for the sector if government reviews and strengthens Cabottage laws.
