The Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe, has said that the business of banking not all about keeping of money for depositors, but more about the overall socio-economic development.

The banker, who made the observations, when the bank celebrated 10 years of promoting sustainable banking, with a week-long event held across branches within and outside Nigeria, assured of firm commitments to the banking principles.

He said the event, tagged “Journey to a Sustainable Future,” was geared towards reiterating the bank’s commitment to sustainable banking.

Wigwe described the celebration as an opportunity to appreciate the results recorded so far, while still setting the pace for better achievements in the coming years.

“We are very interested in people and the planet and we are committed to these. I am happy at the progress we have made with this since we began 10 years ago and I am very sure we will do even better in the coming years.

“I believe we have the most skilled, disciplined and ethical people in the industry and I can make bold to say that it is our collective effort as a team that has gotten us this far in our journey to becoming the world most respected African bank.”

The Head of Sustainability, Access Bank, Omobolanle Victor-Laniyan, pointed out that over 10 years, the bank has initiated several ideas that have demonstrated its commitment to promoting sustainability.

The event featured series of activities like seminars, cooking competition, employee volunteering, movie screening, among others, geared towards deepening the sustainability culture among the staff as well as celebrate the efforts and impact achieved over the period.

Since 2008, Access Bank has been pushing the boundaries on matters relating to sustainability, building value for stakeholders by sustainably making profit, reducing the environmental impact of its business operations and developing the communities it serves.
