Managing director of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Ibrahim Abdulsalam, an engineer, has assured air travelling public that the Nigerian airspace is now completely safe and secured going by the recent calibration and upgrading of its navigational aids.

He stated this in a chat with aviation correspondents recently in Lagos saying that the recent successful calibration exercise and the certificate of fitness issued by the calibration team has finally put to rest insinuations from some quarters about the actual state of these navigational aids.

According to him, some of the gains recorded by his agency so far include the installation of two AFTN switches at the Lagos and Kano Gateways; introduction of CPDLC and Mode S Data Link as alternatives to voice communication; creation of new direct flight routings in Nigeria to reduce flight times; creation of new PBN regional routes linking Nigeria to the rest of Africa and the establishment of coordination links between Nigeria and ASECNA among others.

He also revealed that the process of deploying MLAT/ADS-B in the Gulf of Guinea is still ongoing. Abdusalam said the reason for creating more direct new air routes is to reduce travel time of an aircraft, save fuel for airlines as well as reduce the emission of carbon monoxide (Co2) caused by a flying aircraft.

He also revealed that his agency has an open channel with pilots who communicate with air traffic controllers daily on the performance of these navigational aids, adding that reports from the flying pilots indicate that they are satisfied with NAMA’s services.
