Abia lawmakers accuse Enugu DisCo of poor services, outrageous billing
Abia State lawmakers have joined other electricity consumers in the state in condemning the poor services rendered by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), and accused the company of extortion through the issuance of outrageous bills.
The lawmakers, who decried the estimated-billing method by the EEDC, even when consumers were not supplied with power, consequently resolved to summon the Chairman, National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), to appear before them towards finding a way to the check the EEDC poor services.
The legislators call came on the heels of a meeting held recently by a section of Umuahia electricity consumers, who said they have not had power supply from the EEDC for more than one month even without any explanation or communication by the company.
The consumers had urged the Company to send capable persons to the state to address the cause of the fault (if it is the reason for their non-stop denial of power supply) as the problem was beyond the capacity of the Umuahia based EEDC workers to handle.
The lawmakers took their resolution as one of urgent public importance following the petition filed before them by a widow, who accused the company of causing her hardship through outrageous billing.
The House of Assembly is presently processing a Bill for a law to check what it called indiscriminate installation of Telecommunications Cable and Masts, especially those close to residential areas which allegedly, pose health threats.
According to the Deputy Speaker of the House, Cosmos Ndukwe, the bill is aimed at raising the consciousness of the operators in the telecommunication industry to do the right thing that would save the citizens from possible health hazard that may arise thereof.
