The Influence of Love, written by Nelly Onwuchekwa, is the new addition to the literature of emotional distress, especially in love relationships.

The author said the only happiness in life is to love and be loved. The corollary of love, she stated, is emptiness and a lack of confidence.

With a mission to help couples resolve their conflicts, Onwuchekwa has discovered that a lot of people are in relationships they otherwise shouldn’t be found in because of incompatibility.

“During this period, you would hear spouses say things like, ‘don’t tell my wife’ or ‘don’t tell my husband.’ Sometimes, I had to judge by blaming who was at fault, not because I am God, but because you need to use God-given wisdom to tell the person at fault the truth so that they can retrace their steps and make amends.”

She noted that there is a language of love, which most people do not understand, adding, “Do you understand your spouse’s language?”

Healthy communication, according to the author, is key. The simple word ‘sorry,’ she said, changes every emotional complexity.

The chairman, Prof. Peter Akinsola Okebukola, in his remarks, said, “We are here to talk about the most powerful word in the world today, Love! Love is powerful and intimidating. ‘I love you’ alone can make warring parties drop their arms. For the less privileged, it has gone a long way in giving them hope.”

He, therefore, enjoined everyone to share as much love as they could.

Also, Mr. Frederick Babatunde Odutola said, “We are talking about agape love that prompted God to create the world and the beauty that we celebrate today. Love does not plan that you should fail; this is unconditional love that does not ask for anything in return. It is the type that made Romeo to die for Juliet.”

According to Paul Ananaba, the world, family and any gathering without love is worthless: “That is why we hear of spouses killing themselves these days. How about a country without love?

That is why one person can steal money that can take care of generations for decades and is not bothered. How about the people stealing relief items for the IDP camps?

Even in our places of worship, how many of us show love to others? Love has no language. I hope that by the time you all read this book, our perception of love will not only change but we all would have learnt to walk in love.”

Book reviewer, Mr. Reuben Chinedu Onwubiko, said the book’s release is timely, adding, “We used to say the rate of divorce was high but now we are talking of murder rate. There are complexities in emotional relationship and each topic takes a different problem.

Some people think that lack of children is the cause of the problems in their relationship but even this should not be a problem if there is love.”

He, however, queried the author’s treatment of age difference in marriage, like an older woman marrying a younger man, and said it is not well addressed in the book.

Among dignitaries who attended the launch included the founder of Adeleke University, Adedeji Adeleke, who promised to off-set the cost of publishing the book.
