The celebration of the 50th anniversary of Flora Nwapa’s first novel, Efuru, is set to hold. Maiduguri, which is one of the cities where the event will be held , recently hosted the National Organising Committee on a familliarisation visit. In Maiduguri, Efuru@50 will be marked with a symposium, finals of School Competition and drama. These will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the University of Maiduguri.

National Organising Committee Chairman, Dr. Wale Okediran and the Chairman of Flora Nwapa Foundation, Mr. Uzoma Nwakuche, recently joined members of Maiduguri Local Organising Committee on a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, University Of Maiduguri, Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi in Maiduguri. To receive the visitors on behalf of the Vice Chancellor who was away on official duties were; the two Deputy Vice Chancellors, Prof. Aliyu Shugaba (Academics), Prof. Godowoli (Central Administration) as well as the Registrar and Director of Works.

In her opening remarks, LOC Chairman, Dr. Razinat Mohammed, whose post graduate work was on Efuru, reminded the gathering that Flora Nwapa was a visiting Professor in the university between 1997 and 1998, during which the late writer introduced Creative Writing course to the Department of English. In view of this, she observed that bringing the celebration of Efuru to University of Maiduguri was very appropriate.

Okediran, in his remarks, observed that the celebration, which would take place in five centres in the country, would involve academicians, students as well as members of the public. He, therefore, solicited the support of UNIMAID for a successful outing.

After reminiscing on her mother’s stay in Maiduguri in the late 1990s, Flora Nwapa’s son, Nwakuche, confirmed her mother’s belief that her stay in UNIMAID was the most enjoyable in her academic career.

Prof. Shugaba apologised for the VC’s absence and promised that the university would give the event its full support since the celebrant was once a member of the university’s staff. He also reiterated the university’s commitment to a strong academic tradition, the main reason he said the university remained open throughout the very difficult six-year insurgency period in Borno State.

The visitors later visited the Head of Department of the English, before embarking on a familiarization tour of the beautiful and well maintained campus.Other members of the LOC, who have promised to organise a befitting celebration are Dr. Abubakar Othman, Mr. Bulama, Elisha Isiah, Francis Okoye and Miss Akiya Amos.
