With music fiesta today, series of drama, quiz among schools, political discourse, sports and other activities, St. Denis Catholic Church, Bariga, Lagos, celebrates its 60th anniversary.

The celebrations, which grand finale comes up on October 14, kicked off on May 12 with a praise walk though Fola Agoro and Shomolu.

Chairman of the planning committee, Sir Supo Adigun, told The Guardian that the 60th anniversary celebration started with a novena from September 30 and another praise walk through Bariga market yesterday.

He added that visit to the less-privileged, quiz competition, series of drama on ‘The Call’ and sports day had been lined up to celebrate the church established by the late Rev. Fr. Denis Slattery in 1958.

Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Martins, who used to assist Fr. Slattery at St. Denis, asserted that “the parish has been growing remarkably, spiritually and otherwise,” in its 60 years of existence.

He urged the faithful to keep doing God’s will by preaching the gospel.

“Our duty as a church is to bring Christ to those who have not heard of him, and for those who have heard of him to become one with him, in thoughts and in action,” he said.

The parish priest, Rev. Fr. Francis Anyanwu, confirmed that the youths, men and women organisations had been allotted days to stage drama before the grand finale.
