Obafunwa canvasses development of performing arts
The President, The Dance Deal Training Foundation, Mr Obafunwa Bimbo has stressed the need for the development of performing arts among Nigerian students. Addressing reporters in Lagos recently, he stated that the imperative growth of performing and creative arts in Nigeria cannot be over emphasized.
To this end, he stated that Forward Dance Championship, which is a project of The Dance Deal Training Foundation, in partnership with The Lagos State ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, is committed to the development of Performing Arts in Nigeria. Tagged: ‘Live out Your Dreams (LOYD), he stated that the programme is a free dance education project for Government schools. ‘our goal is to expose them to the performing arts at an early age, to harness their talents and guide them in making the right career choice in the arts. We started the training in 2014.’
Speaking further, he stated that ‘We also want the children to develop a performing Arts culture. For instance, the Lagos State Governor has said that he would build new theatres in the state, to develop culture. The question is who will make use of the theatres if we don’t start empowering them now?
Speaking on the project, he stated that ‘The Forward Dance Championship is an annual dance competition for Government schools in Lagos State, and in the spirit of the Lagos at 50 celebrations, this 2nd edition has been themed ‘Fifty, Excellence and More’. The regional selections will begin on 10th of May and will cover the 6 educational districts in Lagos, while the finals will take place at Teslim Balogun Stadium on June 16.
A total of 120 schools; 20 schools per district will participate in the regionals, 12 of which will be selected to participate in the finals. The winning school will be crowned the ‘Forward Dance Champion 2017’ and will get cash prize and a Performing arts studio in their school. This is in line with our goal to expose them to right environment, that will enhance the development of their talents.
