The contributions of social media towards the popularity of Nigerian music has added more advantage to the Afrobeat genre, which is now one of the most respected genre of music worldwide.

Afrobeat has been credited to multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Fela Kuti, for pioneering and popularizing the genre both within and outside Nigeria, before more musicians in Nigeria decided to follow the path Fela created.

Popular talent manager and music executive Theophy Esuike stipulated that the emergence of the internet and different social media platforms should be applauded for making the Afrobeat music genre go viral till it became more prominent in the international scene.

The Theory-X Entertainment boss added that Nigerian artistes doing Afrobeat and other styles of music like Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Seyi Shay, Mr. Eazi and more, have been able to register their names globally through the aid of social media, which has bridged the gap between Africa and western world.

Theophy said all these to our correspondent when responding to questions about music and social media at the recent edition of comedian Seyi Law’s ‘Fast and Funny’ event, held at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos state.
