Higher institutions’ music competition season two begins

Following the recorded success at the maiden Campus Classicals music reality show, the organisers have unveiled plans for its second season. The show is aimed at exposing music students in Nigeria’s higher institutions to practical classical music beyond their immediate learning environment, as well as for them to have interface with their mates from other institutions.

Speaking on the show, the Managing Director, Classical Showcase Limited, Sylvester Obriko, said it is first of its kind in Nigeria’s higher institutions.

According to Obriko, the reality show is based on classical music, but also has room for other genres to further challenge school authorities and music/performing arts departments to enhance the academic development of their students through intensive music training and competition.

“The second edition will have a maximum of 30 schools participating,” he said, but more importantly, there would be three zonal finals, one for each zone: Southeast, Southwest and Abuja and the grand finale in Lagos come November.

Obriko revealed that Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, would host the Southeast qualifiers, while the Southwest elimination is billed to hold at the Leeds City University, Ibadan. The Northern zone qualifiers holds in Abuja and MUSON Centre, Lagos, is venue of the grand finale.

Anthony Merenini, a Professor of Musicology and one of the consultants to the project, said, “season two would have a bigger impact even beyond the first season, which saw University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Delta State University emerge first and second positions in a competition that showed the enormous musical talents groomed by erudite music tutors in the eight schools that participated.”
