Ten years old Ibukunola Salako is on a mission to preserve Nigerian culture and languages with a new reality TV show. Although it would start with Yoruba, Salako’s aim is to extend her show to embrace other Nigerian languages and culture. Titled Irinkerindo Ibukunola ninu asa ati ede Yoruba (Adventure of Ibukunola in Yoruba culture and language), the television reality show will hit TV screens soon. Salako is the daughter of Nollywood star, Foluke Daramola.

The television show will showcase the beauty of doing things the indigenous Nigerian way with a measure of style. Over the years, Salako is known among her peers for displaying exemplary lifestyle, especially in the preservation of Nigerian culture and helping to conflict modernization has imposed on the local culture.

Her flair for cultural advocacy and her passion to balance heritage and modernity as early as possible in the development of young ones are what would be exclusively captured in the TV series whose aim would be to educate, inform and entertain the global community about Nigeria’s rich culture. Salako and 15 other children will be dishing out what it means to be culturally minded.

Irinkerindo Ibukunola (Adventure of Ibukunola) is a project that promotes the balance of indigenous knowledge of culture, language and tradition among children, especially in the middle and upper middle socio-economic classes of Nigeria. Among other things, it would act as indictment of parents who would rather have their children speak English in school as well as at home and not their mother tongues.

Young Salako has the support of notable Nigerian monarchs such as the Ooni of Ife and the Alake of Egba land in this selfless quest to promote Nigerian culture and languages through the wide medium of television.

According to her mother and mentor, Foluke Daramola, the show, which will cut across every Nigerian tribe, is aimed at showcasing the country’s culture and it would let young Nigerians know that values and morals are built upon the bedrock of culture and tradition, adding they form the foundation for good behaviour.

She noted that the inquisitiveness of her daughter to learn new things about her culture was the driving force behind the new reality show. She noted, “She’s always excited to learn new things about the Nigerian culture, especially spoken words. She jots down any new word she comes across; I tried to make her act along with me but she refused and the more I try to convince her to act, the more unenthusiastic she became. But she loves to read and write and jot every new thing she learns in her diary. So, she was excited when my husband suggested a reality show”.

On how to ensure the reality show does not clash with her daughter’s studies, Daramola said, “Irinkerindo of Ibukun is going to span one season after which we are going to shift to another culture which would be anchored by another member of the group from another tribe. We don’t want to be selfish with just Yoruba culture; we are going to move to Igbo culture until we are able to touch every part of the country”.
