The Yobe State Government is partnering the Federal Government’s Youth Employment and Social Operation (YESO) recovery scheme for the vulnerable and unemployed youths, targeting 2,000 youths from six local government areas of the state.

Inaugurating the scheme recently at the Government House, Damaturu, the state governor Maimala Buni, disclosed that N684 million was earmarked for the implementation of the youth’s empowerment scheme.

“This implementation of this programme comprises cash transfers to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), underprivileged youths and vulnerable households in six insurgency affected local government areas.

“So far, a register of 31,486 households comprising 162, 707 individuals were also identified and cleared by the World Bank. 11 more local government areas are being considered for similar World Bank intervention and support,” the governor said.

YESO’s Coordinator, Bukar Kilo, said the scheme was launched to reduce poverty and unemployment among 2,000 youths from six affected councils of Geidam, Yunusari, Fika, Nangere, Bade and Jakusko.

He said a monthly stipend of N7, 500 was provided to each of the beneficiaries for one year, adding that 136,662 IDPs of 31,486 households were identified and cleared by the World Bank for the implementation of scheme.

National Coordinator of YESO, Mrs. Hajara Sami, said that after graduation, the beneficiaries would be provided with start-up packs to commence practicing of the acquired skills and trades.

Meanwhile, Buni has disclosed that the Trucks Transit Park (TTP) project will create 5,000 jobs and bridge the infrastructure deficit in northern Nigeria, at the ground-breaking and foundation laying ceremony in Potiskum, 100 kilometres west of Damaturu, the state capital.

The 50-hectre project will be furnished with electricity, portable water, access road and a clinic to meet truck drivers’ health needs.

“As the town with possibly of highest concentration of trailer trucks in the whole North, Potiskum would be a lot better with the establishment of park project. With the ever-growing trucking businesses under a single truck haulage hub, the town will be cleaner and less congested,” he said.

He assured the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) and other partners that government would continue to take all measures to ensure a friendly investment climate.

NSC’s Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Hassan Bello, said transport is a critical determinant in conduct of domestic and international trade with great impacts on national economic growth and development.

He said some of the facilities at the park include fuel gas stations, mechanic workshop, hotels/motels, banks, garage, parking lots and training centres.

Similarly, the state government has commenced the revival of dormant industries to create more jobs and increase Internally Generated Revenues (IGR).

The state earmarked N80.44 million for the resuscitation of Flour and Feed mills and another N94.92 million for the revival of Sahel Aluminium factory in Potiskum before the end of October.

Governor Maimala Buni disclosed this while commissioning a 100 KVA generator for the roofing sheet factory at Potiskum.

He stated that machineries have already been put in place with release of N175.4 million in line with his promise to resuscitate comatose industries.

According to him, the resuscitation of dormant industries will improve IGR with increased wealth creation among youths.

“I’m really satisfied with the level of work conducted for the revival of Yobe Flour and Feed Mills, which approved the release of N80.44 million. A management board will also be appointed; to run the mills for maximum productivity and efficiency for profits.”

He said that the N94.92 million released for the roofing sheet factory is meant to refurbish the factory and its premises, including the supply of step tiles aluminium corrugating machine.

Buni directed the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Yobe Investment Company to ensure effective and efficient monitoring to complete supply and installations of machines and equipment on schedules.

He appealed to the Federal Ministry of Industries, Trade and Investment, Organised Private Sector (OPS) and stakeholders to establish more industries in the state.

The industries, according to him, should have comparative advantages in Yobe, adding that government would continue to provide an enabling environment, while efforts are made to revive dormant industries for efficiency and productivity.

The Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Commerce, Goni Gujba and General Manager of the two mills and factory, Mohammed Baballe said the revival would be completed in October for commissioning, while the mills would be ready in 10 weeks.
