Following his intimidating performance profile since his appointment four years ago, the board of directors of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State, has re-appointed Dr. Chris Amah, as the Chief Medical Director of the hospital for another 4-year tenure.

Dr. Amah is a Pediatric surgeon and an alumnus of the college of medicine of the University of Nigeria, UNN.

He is rated by stakeholders as UNTH best CMD of all time who won the hearts of board members for not only transforming the hospital to a true centre of excellence, through massive infrastructural development and the restoration of open heart surgery services, which was suspended for over ten years but, also establishing new units to meet the demand of patients, who hitherto traveled overseas to access care.

A statement from the board said Dr. Amah’s highest contribution, as CMD was the restoration of open-heart surgery and making it a routine, with more than thirty successful operations carried out on patients.

The statement noted that apart from rebuilding the oxygen plant, which was dysfunctional for several years, additional wards were also built to solve the surging population of patients as well as the establishment of a special unit to handle neurosurgical services.

“An ultra modern complex to house all the units in the accounts department was also completed within the period under review, staff welfare was improved upon, and as a result, the hospital staff unions never embarked on strike during his first tenure, of course, this did not include nationwide industrial actions by doctors and other health workers”, the statement added.

The release stated that due to increased revenue generation, staff population improved, as new workers were employed in key positions of need, as part of measures to improve health services and satisfy the yearnings of patients in the hospital.

According to the statement, “The entire hospital was refurbished and modernized to the status of a centre of excellence, as part of a robust attempt to further create a more conducive atmosphere for workers and patients, while a new deputy director finance, Chukwudi Onuchukwu was appointed to inject fresh blood and smoothen administrative process”.

The statement also said that a staff of the hospital, Prof. Martin Aghaji of the cardiothoracic unit, was recently appointed vice chancellor of the Federal University, Oturkpo, while another, Dr. George Ugwu, was elected as the chairman of Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Enugu State branch.

In his acceptance speech, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Amah, said his re-appointment was the handiwork of God and promised to continue to do his best and carry everyone along.
