The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni Association has empowered five final year students of the institution with N500,000 to enable them start up businesses of their choice.

The empowerment scheme, organised in partnership with the student affairs division and Guaranty Trust Bank Plc., was to develop entrepreneurial spirit in students during their stay on campus.

The beneficiaries included Eric Okorugbo of the Department of Zoology and Mariam Olatunji of the Mass Communication Department among others.

Speaking at the award ceremony in Lagos, the association’s National President, Olorogun Sonny Kuku, said the body was demonstrating with the gesture that life after acquisition of tertiary education was not limited to white collar jobs, but also entails identifying other viable means of income.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Francis Shonubi, quoted the president as imploring government at all levels to set up more entrepreneurial schools and make facilities available for the populace to go into small-scale businesses thus creating jobs for themselves and bettering their lot in the long run.
