Expert tasks directors on adherence to regulatory guidance

The Chairman and Publisher of The Guardian Newspaper, Maiden Alex Ibru, has been inducted into the Institute of Directors (IoD). Ibru was inducted alongside 94 others during the June 2019 new members’ induction of the IoD Nigeria, held recently in Lagos.

At the occasion, directors were charged to avail themselves with best practices, upgrade their knowledge, understanding and application of their roles and responsibilities to render unto themselves and society a risk-based discharge of their functions.

With the current state of directors’ responsibility, the need for regulatory guidance, enforcement of best practice as well as corporate governance were also emphasized.

Founder/Chief Executive Officer, Proshare Nigeria Limited, Olufemi Awoyemi, who gave the charge, spoke on the theme, ‘Governance: Who Guards the Guardians?’

Awoyemi, who pointed out the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Oando Plc saga, said the situation was exacerbated by the perception that those empowered to exercise oversight functions themselves have serious issues of corporate governance to contend with.

However, he urged the IoD to retain a watching brief on regulatory developments especially on the SEC/Oando case with a view to coming out with learning guidelines to form a case study when the dust finally settles.

Earlier in his opening remarks, President and Chairman of Governing Council, IoD Nigeria, Ahmed Mohammed, charged the new inductees to remain steadfast and focused in their support for the Institute, for its positive growth and development.

He said the Institute will continue to demonstrate greater concern for the governance of all Nigeria’s private and public sector organisations, even as its leadership welcomes any idea and input by fellows and members towards the achievement of its vision.
