Delighted by the prompt payment of April salaries of federal public servants, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the development just as it enjoins him to ensure that promotion arrears and other allowances owed federal employees are settled in good time.

The payment before the end of the month was informed by a presidential directive that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) must pay workers salaries between 24th and 25th of every month, after series of delay previously.

The workers in a press statement signed by the National President, Bobboi Bala Kaigama and Secretary-General, Alade Bashir Lawal, made available to The Guardian, expressed joy that the OAGF carried out the directive of Mr. President as April 2016 salaries of federal officers have been paid.

We commend Mr. President for this directive and the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation for carrying it out.
“It is our hope that the OAGF has put necessary machinery in place to sustain the payment schedule and not to relapse to the old ways after few months,” the union said.

Besides ASCSN opined that early payment of salaries would boost the morale of employees and enhance productivity in all the federal establishments.

It, therefore, urged the state governments to emulate the federal government on early payment of workers salaries. The union also urged President Buhari to ensure that outstanding salaries, promotion arrears and other allowances owed federal workers captured in the 2016 Budget are paid as soon as it is signed into law.

It emphasized the need for the President to prevail on the federal lawmakers not to remove the vote meant for the settlement of these outstanding benefits to workers from the Budget, saying the Presidency would end up being blamed should such happens.

“And so, the Presidency should persuade the lawmakers to allow the N465 billions voted for workers welfare in the 2016 Budget to stand because anything short of that is capable of pitching the workers and their trade unions against the federal government,” it added.

To this end, it urged the president to continue in his effort to revive the economy and make life more meaningful for millions of hapless Nigerians.
