Wife of the Benue State Governor, Eunice Ortom has enjoined women in the state to aspire for more leadership positions so as to overcome any challenges they may face.

The Benue first lady stated this at the occasion of the “Celebrate Benue Women” with the theme: “Be Bold For Change,” at the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida Square in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

She noted that women are usually underrepresented when they fail to rise up to the challenge of making useful contributions to the progress and development of the society, maintaining that in societies that are socially, politically and economically traumatised, women come to the rescue with their gentle but deft touch to solve society’s problems, particularly in the advanced economies of the world.

Speaking, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ladi Ajene Isegbe commended Governor Samuel Ortom’s positive response to the 35 percent affirmative action for women, saying such has seen the appointment of women into key positions in his administration and demanded for more.

In a paper titled: “Benue Women be Bold for Change,” Professor Oga Ajene of the Benue State University condemned violence against women, which he said manifests in both psychological, sexual harassment and social violence such as discrimination against the girl-child education, genital mutilation among others.

He however, commended the wisdom of some men for encouraging their wives to aspire to higher levels of education and admonished others to emulate them. President of the Nigeria Association of Women in Agriculture (NAWIA), Mrs. Ngizan Chahul commended efforts by the Ortom administration for the annual increase of agricultural budget, a development she said was a demonstration of his readiness for agro-driven industrialisation of the state.
