The Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has appealed to government and employers in the state to do all within their capacity to protect the jobs of their workers.

The Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has appealed to government and employers in the state to do all within their capacity to protect the jobs of their workers.

This is coming on the heels of some companies that are already downsizing due to the coronavirus scourge, as they could no longer cope with payment of salaries.

The labour centre, which noted that it was already feeling the impact of the development, requested for tolerance at this trying period, even as it expressed optimism that with the level of commitment by the government in combating the scourge, the phase would pass.

NLC State Chairperson, Funmi Sessi, who commended the state’s governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for the laudable initiatives, said the state’s commitment in combating the pandemic had earned itself commendation not only in Nigeria but the world at large.

She also commended the recent decision by the government to cater for minor medical and maternity expenses of Lagosians in state hospitals during the period as a welcome development.

While recognising the untiring efforts of the doctors, nurses and health workers in assisting to combat the pandemic and ensuring the well-being of every citizen, she called on the government to do all within its power to protect them in the line of duty by providing adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and motivating them through adequate compensation.

In the distribution of relief materials to the indigent and most vulnerable in the state to cushion the effects of the stay-at-home directive, the NLC chief noted that the target recipients are yet to be reached.

She implored the State Government to make the process more seamless and stress-free by deploying already established structures in the state like market groups, organisations, social groups, trade unions and institutions to reach those in extreme need.

“We shall not fail to recognise the laudable initiative of the government on the neighbourhood market as part of efforts to cushion the effect of the sit-at-home directive but observed that the spread is not enough to meet the needs of Lagosians”, she said.
