As part of efforts to reduce unemployment in the country, the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) in partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is to unveil NECAPreneur E-leaning Scheme to boost entrepreneurship.

NECAPreneur is an e-solution targeted at providing easy-to-access opportunities for the Nigerian youth to enhance their skills and help them stop chasing after white-collar jobs.

Speaking in Lagos, Director General of NECA, Olusegun Oshinowo, said the initiative was in tandem with the association’s mandate to influence economic and socio-labour policies that would create an army of gainfully engaged youths.

“The youths will be employers of labour and ultimately contribute to national development. The target is to get youths to create wealth rather than job seekers,” he said.

Oshinowo lamented a situation where youths roam the streets and become ready tools for social vices.

His words: “The NECAPreneur is designed for youths and undergraduates in Nigeria. The whole idea is to create an environment where we can get our undergraduates to think entrepreneurship before they graduate. While those who have graduated and are unable to get jobs would be motivated to embrace entrepreneurship”.

He added that Nigeria has a population estimated at over 185 million, 50 per cent of which is below 30 years and over 13 per cent are unemployed.

“NECAPreneur, therefore, seeks to aggressively develop and make entrepreneurs of Nigerian youths by creating entrepreneurial consciousness among them.

“As employers’ representative, we have the statistics and the jobs are simply not there, that is the truth. Demand for jobs has by far outstripped the supply for jobs and this is going to continue for a while and we would want to enjoin our youths to take their destinies in their own hands by embracing entrepreneurship,” he stated.

He also said the scheme was activated in tertiary institutions across the country and was also open to graduates.

The programme, he noted, would not only equip them to birth and successfully run their own businesses, but would also lead them into avenues for start-up capital, mentoring, internship opportunities through NECA’s network and certification of successful participants.

The entrepreneurship e-learning programme comes in three stages namely: Basic, intermediate and advanced. It is delivered through video tutorials and texts structured into engaging modules.

Its curriculum is a tested, practical and culturally relevant and is supported by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
