The Federal Ministry of Finance in collaboration with Supreme Management Training and Consultancy Services (SMTCS) Limited has concluded the Career Development and Entrepreneurship Skills Training (Exit Training) for Interns of the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS).

The GIS aims to provide the unemployed and under-employed graduate youths with internship opportunities that will expose them to skills and experiences relevant to the current labour market and enhance their employability while at the same time, maintaining the entrepreneurship traits within the hearts of daring youths.

One of the interns called Ula Ogboka who served in one of the Blue -chip company in Lagos said: “This training by GIS has opened my mind to a whole new world of possibilities, the experience and motivation I have garnered here is far beyond what I can quantify in monetary value and an added advantage in my Human resources skills.”

The graduates said the clear and present opportunity that the GIS provide them to chart the course of their future would be explored. At the end of the 3-day workshop, many interns were confident enough to jettison the idea of waiting for a job from government, as some expressed their intentions of venturing into entrepreneurship both individually and as cooperative groups.

In his welcome address, the National Project Director of GIS Mr. Dennis Chukwu represented by Mr. Aremu Najeem, Assistant Director Monitoring and Evaluation, said: “Since inception till date, 25,186 graduates (68% males, 31% females and 1% vulnerable group) have been deployed by the scheme.

Although, records are still been compiled, data at my disposal reveals that 9,387 have exited the scheme, of which over 1,000 have secured jobs or started own businesses with GIS stipends. Some of these graduates have won the YouWin grants and have gone ahead to expand their businesses.”
