In its efforts to create a more dynamic, effective and efficient public workforce, the Lagos State government has engaged its public servants in digital skills training.

Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Benson Eke, made this known at the opening session of a two-day workshop tagged: ‘Advanced Microsoft Office Training’ organised by the Public Service Staff Development Commission (PSSDC).

He said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode recognises the value that knowledge and skills training bring to bear on the attainment of government’s strategic objectives and its public service.

He pointed out that the ministry has always been a strong advocate of the institutionalisation of training programmes that benefit public officers.
Benson added that consumers are now empowered through search engines and social media, noting that 80 per cent of them conduct online researches before making purchases while 70 per cent of the buyers’ journey is completed before they reach out to sales representatives.

He stressed that digital proficiency and social media have enabled consumers to educate themselves and are now make more informed purchase decisions.

“This also applies to service organisations like the civil service. This, therefore, creates an obligation for organisations to acknowledge and adapt to this digital growth if they want to achieve lasting customer success and be profitable.

“Again, 76 per cent of marketers think that marketing has changed more in the past two years than in the past 50 years, which means that constant training is essential,” he added.

Benson stressed that a short-term investment in digital skills training would result in long-term reward in empowering organisations and their employees, maintaining their competitive advantage and ensuring they are not left behind.

“The government believes that high performances have been known to increase in organisations that expose their human capital to development through training programmes of this nature.

“The need for ensuring and assuring the efficiency and effectiveness of public institutions has never been greater than now. Following this, the leadership of the institutions must be ready to embrace change and to acquire the skills required to engage with change,” he added.
