ICAN urges members to uphold professionalism

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), has called on its members to uphold professionalism and standards.

The Institute made this call at the inauguration and investiture of Tunde Adesokan, as District Chairman, Alimosho, and District Society of ICAN, at the weekend in Lagos.

While reiterating the need for members to abide by professionalism and maintain integrity in their practice, the Institute maintained that accountants have a role to play in the war against corruption and in restoring Nigeria’s economy to its days of glory.

Speaking at the event, Registrar and Chief Executive, ICAN, John Evbodaghe, identified integrity, accuracy and accountability as the watchword of the Institute, and stressed the need for ICAN members to show high sense of ethical standards.

He noted that the inauguration and siting of district societies in communities would help the Institute disseminate its works to societies at large.

“It is always great for us to have district societies. ICAN is a very large organisation and we have members that are spread all over the place but with district societies, it becomes small enough to contain all our members who are spread all over the country and in diaspora.

“It is always a thing of joy to know that we have clusters of our members in some places and they are coming together to form district societies.

“Our watchword is integrity and accuracy and that means that in all that we do, we have to show very high sense of ethical standard and display integrity anywhere we are and be sure of our facts and figures at all times,” he said.

In his remarks, Vice Chancellor, Anchor University, Prof Joseph Afolayan, said the Alimosho and District Society of ICAN would benefit their students immensely as the university trains their students to be professionally qualified before graduating.

He lauded ICAN on the inauguration, stating that it is a positive development that would enable students to interact with professionals on the field, which would add to the quality of students in the university.

His words: “Currently in our country, we talk of corruption. We all know that Nigeria is a very rich country but because of mismanagement of resources we have problems.

“We expect that ICAN would drive the crusade and preach the gospel of integrity and accountability for Nigeria to have a better future.”

Speaking at the event, the district chairman said the institute would continue to develop its members technically to carry out their duties professionally.

Adesokan said: “We are going to train our members to do what they are supposed to do always. The major problem we have in this country is the lack of transparency and accountability.

“We have instituted a programme in ICAN for whistle blowing activities and this is the type of programme that we want to use to reshape the economy of Nigeria.

“We are also working on eradicating quarks from the profession and as a result, we have put in a system to regulate our members through day to day trainings.”
