ICAN pledges support for members in academics

To ensure the prosperity of its members in academics, the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN) has assured those interested in carrying out research in the emerging areas of the profession of its financial and grant supports. This, it said is in realisation of the fact that without research, no progress in knowledge could be achieved.

President of ICAN, Mallam Ismaila Zakari stated this at the opening of a three day annual conference, the 4th in the series titled; “Contemporary Issues in Accounting, Finance and Corporate Governance” organised by ICAN in collaboration with Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State.

He explained that the purpose of the conference is to encourage researchers and chartered accountants to be involved in research, make progress in their career pursuit and largely benefit every facets of the society.
“We are telling our members, who are into academics that without been an expert in research, you cannot make progress in your academic careers. This initiative is a platform to encourage them to pursue accountancy programmes aimed at supporting the academic community so that rich knowledge of accounting will go round in Nigeria and our children and students will be very well enlightened in the business of accounting”.

Zakari said; “We have many supports that we will give to our members so that they can grow in their academics and this includes research support and by this any members of ICAN who is carrying out a PhD research, the institute will give such person generous financial contributions in form of grant to enable them do a successful research. Secondly, we also give ICAN members grant to do what we call commissioned research and this entails coming up with a research area especially on emerging issues in accounting and those involved like a team, we carry out the research on behalf of ICAN. We also support our members in the university who on professorial level with a grant to do what is called inaugural lecture”, he posited.
