‘How training retains workers’
Investing in training of workforce on leadership skills has been identified as a means of retaining workers in an organisation, which also reduces recruitment expense, Lagos State Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, Dr Akintola Benson Oke has said.
Speaking at a two-day workshop for civil servants in Lagos with the theme: ‘Developing leadership competences for enhanced service delivery’, Oke noted that many who voluntarily leave their jobs don’t quit their jobs but quit their bosses, which to him means that employees leave because of ineffective managers and managers with poor leadership skills.
He also stated that when people are equipped with leadership skills it increases their competences, which contribute to the overall productivity and help the government to attain its strategic objectives.
Oke said: “Indeed, as part of engagement and promotional interviews, it is now common place for officers to be required to describe situations they encountered in previous roles, the processes they followed to address the problems, the skills they applied and the results of their actions.”
