The role of Chartered Secretaries in an ICT driven business world may become more complex where the secretary does not keep up with advancement in technology, the Group Company Secretary and Group General Counsel, United Capital Plc, Leo Okafor has said.

He said that a chartered secretary might become extinct, if technology is not deployed to automate routine tasks and add value to the organisation, noting that a chartered secretary is expected to guide the board.

Okafor stated this when he delivered a paper on the challenging roles of Chartered Secretaries in an ICT Driven Economy/Business World at a programme organized by members of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN).

He posited that with technological innovations, a chartered secretary couldn’t afford to be a spectator, especially when companies are becoming increasingly interested in 21st century personnel who can deploy modern technology to deliver fast results.

According to him, the modern trend is the use of software to arrange board papers and communicate without the involvement of stationeries, stressing that the board pack is now an antique that should be relegated to the archives of history.

On the benefits of deploying technology for meetings, Okafor added that it improves operational efficiency, promotes speed, and reduces cost and risk of human error among others.

Speaking on focus for chartered secretaries and compliance as a tool for growth and sustainability, a company secretary, Yomi Adebanjo said secretaries must put in place mechanism for identifying and implementing specific compliance requirement inherent in their functions.
