Group to deploy consumer protection law to curb unfair trade practices

The group noted that such unfair practices could be curbed by promoting the establishment of competitive and responsible markets based on ethical business practices.
   
This was revealed during the Foundation’s dinner, themed: “The right to life and quality living; Wither consumerism in 2020 Nigeria,” in Lagos. 
   
President, HRF, Victor Fakunle, called for the protection of citizens’ rights due to the relevance of justice to ensure faurness. 
   
“Years ago, I remember asking a lawyer to represent one of our clients; he said he would only provide representation unless the client was innocent. This happened on many occasions with other lawyers. That baffled me and have often wondered if the legal institutions and law schools in Nigeria were of the same school of thought,” he said. 
 


He noted that 70 percent of people in prisons are awaiting trial, and most of them are without representation. 
   
According to him, the Foundation educates citzens on their human rights, and makes access to justice easy by providing free world-class legal representation to indigent persons who can’t afford legal representation.
   
Director General, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Babatunde Irukera, noted that Nigeria’s healthcare system is in need of a revamp, while reacting to the gruesome death of Moradeun Balogun, who died after the hospital’s refusal to treat her from a neck stab. 
 
“She didn’t get sufficient emergency attention which might have changed the outcome of things,” he said. 
   
He suggested that Nigeria should focus on the gaps in healthcare infrastructure, in not just the hospitals but how care is provided.
