GCU honours Keyamo, Sagay, JP Clark, others at 75th anniversary celebrations

Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo, was among prominent old boys of Government College, Ughelli (GCU) honoured with Leading Light in the Humanities Award at the 75th Founders’ Day celebration recently.
Keyamo was honoured alongside Chief Albert Akpomudje, Chief Charles Edosomwan, and nine others.

They include Amb. BA Clark, Prof. JP Clark, Peter Enahoro, and Sam Amuka among others.Speaking at the event, Keyamo said his experience at GCU was unforgettable. He commended the GCUOBA for the work done to improve facilities at the school, and promised to play an active role in these areas.

To support learning at the school, the minister presented 40 laptop computers to the school for use by the students.
The school’s assembly hall, renovated by the class of 1970, which celebrated their golden jubilee admission into the GCU, was inaugurated by President General Worldwide of Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association, Arc Charles Majoroh.

Majoroh praised the 1970 class for renovating the assembly hall and said it fits perfectly into the roadmap of the Old Boys Association, to rebuild the dilapidated facilities at the school and build new ones, adding that so much has been done but more still needs to be done.

In his words, “Our goal is to restore GCU lost glories and make it a cradle of excellence once again.”The Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Patrick Ukah, who also represented Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, said he was very proud of what the old boys have done to restore the facilities of the school and commended the passion with which the old boys took issues concerning GCU.

Drawing a leaf from the activities of the GCUOBA, Ukah said the Delta State Government would encourage all schools to have active old students associations to corral support for the development of their schools.He announced the decision of the state government to build five new Masters’ Quarters in the school to accommodate more teachers on the school premises and directed that the School Management Board be inaugurated without further delay. He said the board will have representatives of the old boys association. He also promised action on the repair of some facilities at the school.
